James Kostuchuk, one of the educators who brought the roving campus to life.
Our guest at this week’s meeting was James Kostuchuk. James was instrumental in the development of the Roving Campus; an alternative classroom for students who had developed a mistrust of the school system, who had very poor attendance and by all conventional measures, an insurmountable lack of credits. He described the tremendous success of this program that at its core, built community for these kids for whom community was lost within the school system. The values of this program are: That the material taught to these students must be worth knowing, that the students must be able to think and be active in their learning, that the connection between the classroom and the outside world matter ad that the teacher-student relationship must be one of trust and openness. We thank James for his part in bringing this revolutionary new method of educating to the kids of Portage and area.
