Our guest today was Aldene Moroz, pictured here, center, coordinator of Sunset Palliative along with board members Emily Gray, (left). Caitlin Giercke, (right). Sunset Palliative Care is a non-profit charitable organization that provides end of life care and support for both patients and their caregivers and families. The goal of Sunset Palliative care is to bring hope, dignity, choice and control to those who are reaching the end of their life, and that when death comes, that it may be peaceful and free of pain. Individual and unique support plans are made with each of the 60-65 referrals they receive each year. Sunset Palliative care has a team of over 35 volunteers that help with these care plans providing companionship and respite. They also provide follow-up and bereavement support after the death has occurred. Many will be aware of the two rooms that have been renovated at the Portage District General Hospital to support palliative patients and their families. They are thrilled to share that our new hospital will feature six palliative care rooms, along with a family lounge and an outdoor, patient accessible patio. The Memory Garden at Island Park has been created by Sunset Palliative Care, it provides a public yet private space where folks can go to remember and contemplate a loved one. There are plans in the near future to expand the Memory Garden with a space devoted to honouring children who have died. All of these programs and services are provided to families at no cost, and Sunset Palliative Care receives no government funding, instead it relies on fundraising and community support. We are very grateful for this extremely important work being done in our community.
